Donald Glover - This is America & Star Wars
The multi-talented Donald Glover known for his breakout role on Community has been climbing the ranks in cinema and with his music career, under the name Childish Gambino. This month has shown major developments for Glover and he's reaching new heights with his talents. Over the past weekend, he released a video for Childish Gambino's single, "This is America," depicting controversial social commentary on the current state of racial tension in the United States. The video shows a self-aware performance about perception, scarcity, and the sense of urgency created by escalating fear in the current American political climate. With Glover front in center, his intellectual prowess shines.
"An internal struggle begins in the viewer’s body, which is pulled between joy and horror. Just as the video questions how we can dance when there is pandemonium all around, the audience struggles with whether to continue moving, too, after witnessing such brutality, especially after Glover shoots an entire choir of gospel singers, supposedly in reference to the 2015 murder of nine churchgoers by Dylann Roof in Charleston, South Carolina." - The Atlantic
On the complete opposite end of the spectrum, where Glover is performing for the sake of pure entertainment, is the most recent Star Wars movie, 'Solo: A Star Wars Film.' The film, which will officially premiere on the 15th and be released on the 25th has already garnered positive reactions from die-hard Star Wars fans. As reported in The Hollywood Reporter, Peter Sciretta from Slashfilm tweets, "#Solo was a blast. The Kasdans nail the character of Han Solo. Yes, the story is a series of expected events (Han meets chewie....etc) but none of them happen as expected. Stay away from spoilers, big Marvel-level shit that will make you wonder where Lucasfilm is headed next."
The duality shown by Glover with both these projects show he's a true contemporary actor/musician and is completely in his element.
