Solo Falters in US, China, and Worldwide - Has the Franchise Peaked?

With the unofficial start of summer in the United States, Memorial Day, behind us - it’s time for the big Hollywood blockbuster season. The latest instalment from the Star Wars franchise, ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story,” was supposed to kick things off as one the first major summertime flicks.  However, many sources are reporting underwhelming sales and numbers. Its gross sales totalled 103 million USD for the holiday weekend, after opening with 84.7 million USD over three days, and 148 million USD worldwide. These figures are way under projections and puts the film at the worst performing since Disney took over in 2015.

“Solo” represents the lowest opening for a “Star Wars” film since Disney took over the franchise starting with 2015’s “The Force Awakens.” As the first film in the sequel trilogy, “The Force Awakens” launched with a massive $248 million three-day total. A year later, “Rogue One” debuted with $155 million, while the most recent installment prior to “Solo” — “The Last Jedi” — bowed just five months ago in December 2017 with $220 million.” - Variety

In China, where audiences haven’t been very receptive towards Disney’s Star Wars films, ‘Solo’ earned just 10.1 million USD. This makes the film one of the worst performing of any major Hollywood film to be shown in China. To compare, 2016’s ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ earned 52 million USD during its two-day opening weekend. The subsequent films continued to slide.

“A year later, Rogue One slipped to $31 million over a full three-day frame, despite co-starring Donnie Yen and Jiang Wen, two of China's biggest actors. Rian Johnson's The Last Jedi fared even worse, earning $28.7 million for a second-place start behind a local hit comedy.” – Hollywood Reporter

It seems audiences have reached a saturation point for Star Wars content, and there’s not much left of the story to tell. Even this review from Screen Daily is more of a matter-of-fact account than a positive recommendation.
